By detailing the development of specific test cases of industrial interest in the aeronautical sector, this paper describes how the RBF4AERO Benchmark Technology is able to reliably and accurately perform icing simulations. Such a numerical platform has the mesh morphing technique as core technology, and it has been conceived, as a whole, to handle high-demanding CAE analyses such as ice accretion and fluid-structure interaction simulations, as well as multi-objective and multi-physics optimizations including morphing-adjoint coupling.

The meshless characteristic of the usage of radial basis functions, namely the mathematical framework the mesh morphing approach is founded on, enables to potentially link the platform procedures to all solvers in view of applying shape modifications to computational models through mesh as long as its nodes’ coordinates can be modified.

The outputs of ice accretion simulations on 2d and 3d models obtained using both open source and commercial CFD solvers according two different approaches are detailed. Those icing simulations are part of a set of studies that are scheduled in the development of the EU FP7 Project RBF4AERO.
